Schools'Agriculture and Nutrition Program School Presentations
- Help others to learn about our fair. Call our office to schedule
a presentation at your school or district office. Spread the word
about our program to teachers and administrators.
Save-the-date: Schools' Agriculture and Nutrition Fair "From
Seed To Supper" Tuesday April 20 through Saturday April
24, 2010 at the Pomona Fairplex, Building 10.
Purpose of the Fair: the fair is an agricultural educational
fair featuring thousands of individual and classroom entries from
hundreds of schools in the greater Los Angeles basin. Exhibits/projects
include art, photography, beneficial insects and worms, birdhouses,
crafts, horticulture, hydroponics, mission models, paintings, posters,
quilts, quilt blocks, sawhorses, scarecrows, school garden projects,science
projects, terrariums and trout-in-the-classroom projects.
The event attracts students, families, educators, and community
members to celebrate the achievements of local students (pre-K through
high school) and teachers, and to educate the attendees about the
importance of agriculture and nutrition to California.
The date of the 7th VIP Preview of the Fair will be Tuesday
April 20th at 6PM
The 6th annual Teacher Recognition Day will be held Saturday,
November 7th 2009 at Cal Poly Pomona AGRIscapes. Event will include
awards, luncheon, resources, workshops and speaker.

July 6 Anniversary of First Successful Antirabies Inoculation,
1885 Louis Pasteur gave the first successful antirabies inoculation
to a boy who had been bitten by an infected dog.
July 10 Don't Step on a Bee Day Besides the fact that it
won't feel good, bees are important in the production of many food
items. Save the bees!
July 11-17 National Farrier's Week Salute the people who
keep horses shod and equine feet and legs in top-notch condition.
July 14-Aug. 1 California State Fair Enjoy the history and
traditions of the fair. Be sure to stop by the farm animals and
the Agriculture Building.

scratch! See its direct connection to agriculture!
July 22 Gregor Johann Mendel Birth Date, 1822 Mendel is
known as the pioneer of genetics. His research was on peas but certainly
impacts all agricultural commodities today.
July 28 Beatrix Potter Birth Date, 1866 Potter is known
for her love of animals and her story The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

National Inventors' Month Farmers are inventors on a daily
basis! Do a research project on some of the famous inventors who
have created time- and labor-saving equipment for America's farmers.
August Aug. 7 National Mustard Day The yellow mustard flowers
seen in vineyards are planted because the roots of these plants
contain bacteria that put nitrogen back into the soil. The seeds
of the flowers are ground and made into vinegar.
Aug. 15-21 National Aviation Week Airplanes play a role
in agriculture, too. From viewing levees and planting rice to fertilizing
soils and controlling pests, aircraft are an integral component
of agriculture
Aug. 19 "Black Cow" Created in 1893 A bovine it's not,
but it's awfully yummy! The Black Cow was the first root beer float,
developed by Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, CO.

to experience farm life from the pioneer past. Students will be
able to make butter; grind coffee, pump water, and much more.

with the chance to spend an hour with unique farm animals at no

nature, exploring water and land ecosystems, studying plant and
animal habitats, and observation of lake, pond, swamp and stream
